There was nothing special about that day. Nothing that would make God’s presence as evident as it was. There was nothing miraculous, nothing supernatural, nothing extraordinary. There wasn’t anything different.
I went about my day. Same morning routine, same tasks at work, same people to see and talk with. Nothing different, as I worked at the church that day. So, why? Why did He seem to pour out from all of the ordinary, same, everyday moments?
He was there in our time of worship when everything seemed quiet and calm. He was there in moments of grief as I witnessed a family gathering to remember a loved one. In the moments when everything seemed rushed, with no time to stop and think, He was there, along with a sense of peace I could not put into words.
Looking back, examining that day, something was different. There was one thing that would change everything about that day and every day after that. What was different?… I looked for Him. And as always, He was there.
How many times have I missed Him simply because I did not look for Him? And yet, He was there, waiting for me to notice Him. Waiting for me to shift my focus off all that surrounded me and fix my gaze on Him. Waiting for me to take the focus off of myself and back on Him. Many times, I have forfeited peace for all the noise when, all the while, He was there all the time.
What are you looking for? Are you looking for Him? Sure, we expect Him in the obvious. We hope to “feel something” in a worship service with all the music, smoke, and lights or when amazing things happen that we can’t explain. But the truth is, He’s in everything. And we’ll see Him if we simply look for Him.
“You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13
