“Music expresses what words cannot.” I have a plaque on our piano with these very words engraved on it. I think we all agree that music is very influential and has the capability of affecting our emotions. During a time when my emotions were all over the place it was very helpful to have a playlist of songs that brought peace, were encouraging, and that also spoke of God’s Truth and His promises.
If you haven’t read our story about when my husband was in the hospital, fighting for his life, you can check it out here: https://wonderfullymessy.com/2022/01/17/walking-thru-the-valley-of-the-shadow-of-death/. During that time of distress, these songs played a huge role in helping me through the questions, heartache, and anxiety. They were my prayers in form of song. These songs beautifully expressed my heart and needs to God. They were literally on repeat every single day.
I pray that they can be an encouragement to you if you find yourself in a place where you didn’t expect to be or are going through circumstances where you’re not sure what the outcome will be. 🖤
CeCe Winans – Believe For It
My daughter sent this song to me when Joey first went into the hospital. I remember the first time listening to it. Standing in my kitchen, crying and praying these words to Jesus, believing with all that I had for a miracle. This song became our anthem song that would later and forever remind us of the valley that we walked through. It has taken two years for me to be able to listen to it again and still to this day, I cannot listen to it without crying. CeCe Winans – Believe For It
Elevation Worship – Never Lost (Backroom Sessions)
This was a song that Joey and our three children were working on to play and record together before he got sick. I played it over and over again to him while he was intubated. My hope was that he could hear it and continue to fight. Elevation Worship – Never Lost (Backroom Sessions)
Maverick City – Promises
This song always seemed to play at the same time, every single morning as I drove to the hospital. A beautiful reminder of God’s faithfulness. “Though the storms may come and the winds may blow, I’ll remain steadfast. And let my heart learn when You speak a word it will come to pass!” Maverick City – Promises
Church of the City (feat. Jon Reddick) – God Turn It Around
My dear friend and coworker who walked right alongside us during this time, sent this song to me. Another song I prayed that God would in deed turn it around! Church of the City (feat. Jon Reddick) – God Turn It Around
Bethel Music (feat We The Kingdom) – Peace
When I needed to calm my mind and body (which was very often), I played this song. It later became a necessity when my panic attacks became severe. A beautiful reminder of a peace that only God can bring. Bethel Music (feat We The Kingdom) – Peace
Brandon Lake – Too Good to Not Believe
My son, Cameron was talking about this song one evening. I hadn’t heard it but as he was telling me about the words, I quickly looked it up and it immediately went on my playlist. Brandon Lake – Too Good to Not Believe
Bethel (feat. Jenn Johnson) – Goodness of God
This has been a favorite for so long. Something happens when you praise God in the midst of difficulty. Although I faced losing my husband, and my children their father, I sang this song out to God. Even as He would have us walk this path, I was going to praise Him and tell of His goodness. Bethel (feat. Jenn Johnson) – Goodness of God
Leeland – Way Maker
This song needs no explanation. HE is in fact a Way Maker, Miracle Worker, Promise Keeper, Light in the Darkness! Often when I prayed, I specifically called out the many names of Jesus; proclaiming them and praising Him for all He is and all He can do. Leeland – Way Maker
Calvary Worship – There’s Something About That Name
This song is an older song I learned when I was a little girl; I first heard it sung by The Gaither Vocal Band. It has always been a favorite as it is a very worshipful song. There is something calming and powerful in speaking the name Jesus. This recording is from our own worship team and my son, Cameron played keys this day. This was also a day when Joey had came home and we attended church. It brought me to tears to hear them sing this song, since it had been such an impact during Joey’s time in the ICU. (The song starts at 26:20) Calvary Worship – There’s Something About That Name
Calvary Worship (feat. Matt Hammitt) – Worship from October 31, 2021
This was worship from the night before Joey was intubated. That evening, I asked Joey if he wanted to watch Church online. Joey was actually scheduled to play that weekend and had been looking forward to it. I remember watching Joey as he closed his eyes in worship, it was a beautiful sight. I love the fact that the very night before intubation was imminent and Joey faced the possibility that this could be the end, he worshiped. Calvary Church with Skip Heitzig (feat. Matt Hammitt) – Worship from October 31, 2021
His Strength is Perfect – Steven Curtis Chapman
One of the many Bible verses during that time was 2 Corinthians 12:9 – And He said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness. I’ve always loved this song, but again it was the gentle reminder that HE is strong when our strength is gone. His Strength is Perfect – Steven Curtis Chapman
